Etymology
مُحْبِط comes from the Form IV verb أَحْبَطَ, built on the triliteral root ح-ب-ط. In classical Arabic this root described an animal's belly swelling after it ate harmful pasture and then collapsing, and by extension it came to mean an effort or deed that swells with promise and then comes to nothing, as in the Quranic phrase about deeds that حبطت, become void. مُحْبِط is the active participle of the causative verb, naming the thing or person that makes hope or effort collapse this way. Modern usage narrowed this to the everyday sense of causing frustration or discouragement.
