Etymology

The word comes from the Semitic root q-d-m, which carries the sense of being in front, ahead, or first in time. Form II of the verb, qaddama, means to put something forward or present it. مُقَدِّمَة is the feminine active participle of that verb, so it literally names the thing that comes forward first, which in practice is the opening section of a text or the front line of a force.
