Etymology

مَصْرَع comes from the Arabic root ص ر ع (ṣ-r-ʿ), whose verb صَرَعَ means to throw someone down or fell them, as in wrestling. The prefix م turns the root into a noun of place, so the word literally names the spot where someone falls. Arabic news writing then narrowed that literal sense to mean death itself, especially sudden or violent death.
