Etymology

مَعْرَكَة comes from the triliteral root ع-ر-ك, whose base verb عَرَكَ means to rub, grind, or chafe. From the image of two sides grinding against each other, the root took on the sense of fighting. With the mīm prefix and the مَفْعَلَة pattern, the word names the place or occasion of that clash, that is, a battle. The Hebrew מַעֲרָכָה, 'battle line,' is a parallel formation on a matching Semitic root.
