شَيّ is the verbal noun of the verb شوى, to roast or grill. The root ش و ي carries the sense of cooking food over an open fire. The form comes from شَوْي, where the wāw shifts to yāʾ and assimilates, the same pattern seen in طَيّ from طوى and كَيّ from كوى. The related noun شِواء means grilled meat.
