Etymology

رَقْص is the verbal noun of the verb رَقَصَ, to dance. It comes from the Semitic triconsonantal root r-q-ṣ, tied to leaping and rhythmic movement. Classical lexicographers also applied the verb to the shimmer of a mirage and the bobbing gait of a galloping animal. The word has kept its core sense of dancing throughout the history of Arabic.
