The verb comes from the Semitic root n-d-y, tied to dew and moisture. The base noun نَدًى (nadan) means 'dew' and, by a common extension, 'generosity,' since a giving person is likened to life-giving rain. From the same root Arabic forms the adjective نَدِيّ, 'moist' or 'fresh.' The verb describes a thing taking on that dampness.
