Etymology
Mawsim comes from the Semitic root w-s-m, 'to mark or brand.' It first meant a time or place marked out for a set activity, above all the season of the Hajj and the trade fairs held alongside it. From there it broadened to any season. Arab and Indian Ocean traders applied it to the seasonal winds, and through Portuguese the word reached English as 'monsoon.'
