Etymology

رابِع comes from the Semitic triconsonantal root ر-ب-ع, which carries the sense of four. It uses the فاعِل pattern that Arabic applies to the ordinals from second to tenth. The same root yields أَرْبَعة, the cardinal number four, and رُبْع, a quarter. Cognate ordinals built on this root appear across the Semitic family.
