Etymology

Mufrad comes from the Semitic root f-r-d, which carries the idea of being single, alone, or set apart. It is the passive participle of the verb afrada, to single out or isolate, so it literally means something made single. Arabic grammar adopted it as the standard label for the singular number, opposed to the dual and the plural.
