Etymology
مُثَلَّج comes from the Semitic root ث-ل-ج, which carries the sense of snow or ice. The verb ثلّج (Form II) means to ice or chill something, and مُثَلَّج is its passive participle, literally something made icy. Over time the word narrowed from a general adjective for anything chilled to a specific food noun for ice cream and frozen desserts sold in shops.
