Word family
Etymology
مُغَنِّي is the active participle of the Form II verb غَنَّى (ghannā), "to sing," built on the triliteral root غ-ن-ي. Arabic lexicographers link this root to غَنِيّ, "rich," and غِنى, "sufficiency," on the idea that a person who has enough does not need to ask for anything, and singing was a mark of that ease. The same root, with a different vowel pattern, gave classical Arabic both its word for wealth and its word for song.
