Etymology

مُحاوَلَة is the verbal noun of the form III verb حاوَلَ (ḥāwala), 'to try'. Both come from the triliteral root ح-و-ل (ḥ-w-l), whose base sense is turning, changing, or coming between. The form III pattern adds the idea of directing effort toward something, so the verb means to seek to bring a thing about and the noun names that effort: an attempt. The same root gives حال (ḥāl), 'state', and تَحَوُّل (taḥawwul), 'transformation'.
