Etymology

The word comes from the triliteral root ح-و-ل (ḥ-w-l), which carries the sense of changing, turning, and transformation. The Form X verb اِسْتَحَالَ (istaḥāla) means to be transformed and, by extension, to become absurd or impossible. مُسْتَحِيل is its active participle, literally something that turns away from coming about, hence impossible.
