Etymology
The word derives from the Arabic root kh-b-r, which carries the sense of knowing, informing, and testing. It is the plural of the noun mukhābara, a form III verbal noun meaning correspondence or the exchange of news. Over the twentieth century the plural fixed on the specialized meaning of state intelligence bodies. The same root once gave the word for a telephone exchange.
