مُدَّعَى is the passive participle of the Form VIII verb اِدَّعَى (iddaʿā), built on the root د-ع-و, which carries the core sense of calling or summoning. The infixed ت of Form VIII assimilates into the doubled د, giving the verb a reflexive or self-interested shade: to call something for oneself, hence to claim or allege. The word surfaces mainly in legal Arabic, where it denotes the matter being asserted in a suit.
