Etymology
The word comes from the Arabic root و-د-ع (w-d-ʿ), which carries the sense of leaving something in place or entrusting it to someone. Form X of the root, استودع (istawdaʿa), means to deposit something with another party for safekeeping. مُسْتَوْدَع is the place-noun built from that verb, so it literally names the location where things are left or deposited. The same root gives وداع (farewell), since bidding someone farewell is, in this root's logic, a kind of leaving them behind.
