Etymology

Ẓahīrah comes from the Semitic root ẓ-h-r, the same root behind ẓahara, meaning to appear or become visible. Noon marks the moment the sun stands at its most visible and direct point overhead, and the same root gives Arabic the word for back (ẓahr), since at noon a person's shadow shrinks and one effectively stands with the sun overhead rather than in front. The word is a native Semitic formation, not a borrowing.
