مُفْتَرَض is the passive participle of the Form VIII verb اِفْتَرَضَ, meaning to assume or suppose. Both come from the Semitic root ف-ر-ض, which first meant to notch or cut a mark, then to fix a share, and finally to impose a duty. The derived stem narrowed this to the mental act of positing something as given. The same root produced فَرْض, a religious obligation, a word later borrowed across the Muslim world.
