Etymology

The word comes from the triliteral root ه-د-ف, which carries the sense of aiming at or facing a thing. In Classical Arabic هَدَف also named a raised mound or a large butt used as a target in archery. From that physical target the meaning widened to any aim or objective. In modern speech it also names a goal scored in football.
