Etymology
The verb comes from the Semitic root ش-ك-ر, which carries the sense of gratitude and acknowledgement. Classical Arabic lexicons tie it to a concrete image: a she-camel is called شَكِرَة when her udder fills with milk on little fodder, an animal that gives back generously for small care. From that picture of generous return grew the meaning 'to thank.' The root is native Semitic and has no Indo-European source.
