Etymology

أَدْرَك is the Form IV verb of the triliteral root د-ر-ك (d-r-k), whose core sense is reaching or overtaking. From the physical idea of catching up with something, the meaning extended to mental grasping, that is, realizing or perceiving. The same consonantal root appears in Hebrew as ד-ר-ך, used for treading and walking a path.
