Etymology

إِدْرَاك is the verbal noun of the Form IV verb أَدْرَكَ, built on the triliteral Semitic root د-ر-ك (d-r-k). The root's core sense is physical: to reach a place, catch up with something, or arrive at a limit. Arabic extended that sense from the body to the mind, so 'reaching' something became 'grasping' it mentally, the same shift English makes with the verb 'grasp'.
