Etymology
ظُفُر goes back to an old Semitic root, ẓ-p-r, meaning nail, claw, or hoof. The same root shows up in Hebrew צִפֹּרֶן (tsipporen) and in Akkadian ṣupru, both also meaning fingernail. The vowel pattern fuʿul used here is common for words naming small body parts. Since this root is Semitic rather than Indo-European, it has no Proto-Indo-European ancestor.
