Etymology
The root s-h-l carries the sense of ease, smoothness, and flat ground; the plain noun سَهْل even means a flat plain, the kind of terrain that is easy to cross. Doubling the middle radical produces the Form II pattern, a standard Arabic device for turning a quality into a caused action. So سَهَّل means to cause something to become easy, that is, to facilitate it. This pattern is native to Semitic morphology and has no link to Indo-European roots.
