Etymology
The word comes from the Semitic root r-q-q, which carries the sense of thinness and fineness. Classical Arabic used the masculine adjective raqīq for anything physically thin or, by extension, for a tender feeling or manner. The feminine form raqīqah later became a fixed technical noun for a single thin sheet or layer, covering everything from pastry dough and metal foil to modern silicon wafers, and its broken plural raqā'iq is now the everyday word for flakes and chips.
