Etymology

The word comes from the Semitic root z-r-ʕ, whose core sense is sowing seed. Classical Arabic built زِراعَة on the pattern fiʿālah, which turns a root action into the name of a trade or practice, the same pattern seen in صِناعَة (industry) and تِجارَة (trade). So زِراعَة literally denotes the practice of sowing, and by extension the whole activity of farming.
