مُكالَمة is the verbal noun of the Form III verb كالَمَ, 'to converse with.' It is built on the triliteral root ك-ل-م, which carries the sense of speech and words, as in كَلِمَة, 'word,' and كَلام, 'speech.' The مُفاعَلة pattern marks a reciprocal action, here the exchange of talk between two people. The modern sense, 'phone call,' grew from this older meaning of conversation.
