Etymology

مُنْتَظَر comes from the Semitic root ن-ظ-ر (n-ẓ-r), meaning to see or watch. The Form VIII verb اِنْتَظَرَ (intaẓara) built on this root means to wait for, literally to keep watching for something. مُنْتَظَر is its passive participle, so it names the thing being watched for, the thing awaited. Arabic is a Semitic language, not Indo-European, so it has no Proto-Indo-European root.
