Etymology

وَرْشَة denotes a place of manual or mechanical work, and in the twentieth century it also took on the sense of a training seminar. The root و-ر-ش has no clear classical Arabic meaning of 'labor', so most reference works treat the word as a borrowing, though they disagree on the donor language. No Indo-European ancestor for the word is established, so none is claimed here. The seminar sense spread across the Arab world through education and NGO usage in the late twentieth century.
