Etymology
تَجاهَل comes from the Semitic root ج-ه-ل (j-h-l), meaning to lack knowledge or to be ignorant. Arabic verb Form VI, the تَفاعَل pattern, often marks a feigned or affected state, so تَجاهَل literally means to make oneself appear ignorant. In practice it means to pretend not to know or notice something, that is, to ignore it on purpose. The same root gives الجاهِلِيَّة, the term for the pre-Islamic Age of Ignorance.
