Etymology
Shughl comes from the Arabic triliteral root sh-gh-l, whose base verb shaghala means to occupy or keep someone busy. Shughl itself is the verbal noun of that root, so it literally names the state of being occupied with something. The same root gave Arabic its everyday words for a busy person, for operating a machine, and for a preoccupation.
