Etymology

The word comes from the Semitic root n-h-y, which carries the sense of ending or forbidding. The Form VIII verb intahā means to come to an end or cease, and muntahī is its active participle, literally the one or thing that has reached its end. Because the root is Semitic rather than Indo-European, it has no Proto-Indo-European ancestor or European cognates.
