Etymology

هَزّ comes from the Arabic triliteral root ه-ز-ز, a geminate root built around the idea of moving something back and forth. Classical dictionaries such as Lisan al-Arab already list هَزّ as the basic verb for shaking an object. The same root gives Arabic the noun هَزَّة (a tremor or jolt) and the Form VIII verb اهْتَزَّ (to shake, to vibrate). Arabic is a Semitic language, not an Indo-European one, so it has no Proto-Indo-European ancestor.
