Etymology

Arabic فِلْفِل traces back to Sanskrit pippalī, the name for long pepper, a plant native to India. The word moved west along trade routes, passing through Persian on its way into Arabic, while a separate branch passed through Greek péperi and Latin piper into most European languages. Arabic filfil and English pepper are therefore distant relatives, each borrowed independently from the same ancient source rather than from each other.
