Etymology
The word comes from the Semitic root و-ك-ل (w-k-l), which carries the sense of entrusting or handing a matter over to someone. On the faʿīl pattern, وَكِيل names the person to whom affairs are entrusted. The same root gives al-Wakīl, one of the names of God in the Quran, meaning the Trustee who takes charge of all things.
