Etymology
Αγαθό is the neuter form of the ancient Greek adjective ἀγαθός, meaning good or noble. Greek speakers turned the neuter adjective into a noun, so 'the good thing' became simply 'a good'. The word kept both a concrete economic sense, as in goods or commodities, and an abstract philosophical sense, as in the Good discussed by Plato and later Christian writers. The origin of ἀγαθός itself is disputed among linguists, with no PIE root that scholars agree on.
