The abbreviation εκ. stands for εκατομμύριο, a compound of εκατό (hundred) and μύριοι (ten thousand, or by extension a countless multitude). Ancient Greek used μυρίος for very large, often uncountable quantities, and later Greek combined it with εκατό to name the specific figure of one million.
