Word family
Etymology
The word joins the intensifying prefix ολο- (from όλος, "whole, entire") with μόναχος, an old adjective meaning "alone, solitary." μόναχος itself comes from μόνος ("alone, only") plus a suffix, and it is the same word that gave Greek its term for a monk. The compound simply pushes the sense of aloneness to its extreme: not just alone, but wholly alone.
