Etymology

Ακτή descends from Ancient Greek ἀκτή, which meant headland or shore. Some scholars have tried to link it to a root meaning sharp point, imagining a headland as a jutting edge of land. Others, including the etymologist Robert Beekes, consider the word likely pre-Greek and of unknown, non-Indo-European origin, so no firm ancestry is settled.
