Etymology

Λόρδος is a direct loanword from English "lord", adopted into Greek to name the British aristocratic title. Greek has no native equivalent title, so it borrowed the English word rather than translating it. The Greek ending -ος was added to fit the word into the standard masculine second-declension pattern. English "lord" itself comes from Old English hlāford, a compound of hlāf (loaf, bread) and weard (guard), literally "loaf-guardian".
