Etymology

Σοφίτα is a loanword from Italian soffitta, the feminine form of soffitto, meaning ceiling or attic space. Soffitto descends from Latin suffictus, the past participle of sufficere, to put underneath or substitute, built from sub- and facere, to make. Greek picked up the word through centuries of contact with Italian speakers in ports and islands, keeping the Italian sense of the room just under the roof.
