Etymology

Ατυχία comes from Ancient Greek, built from the negative prefix α- (not, without) attached to τύχη (luck, fortune, chance) plus the abstract-noun suffix -ία. Τύχη itself was personified in Greek myth as Tyche, the goddess of fortune. The root's deeper origin is uncertain, so no reconstructed Indo-European ancestor is given here.
