Etymology
Βαριό is the neuter form of the ancient adjective βαρύς, which already meant heavy in weight in Homeric Greek. Linguists trace it to a Proto-Indo-European root for heaviness that also produced Latin gravis. The demotic ending -ιό replaced the older -ύ neuter ending by analogy with other common adjectives like παλιό, a shift that happened gradually as spoken Greek simplified its adjective endings.
