Etymology

The word builds on γέρων, meaning old man or elder. From this root Greek formed γερουσία, a council of elders, the original senate of a city-state. Adding the agent suffix -αστής, meaning a member or participant, gave γερουσιαστής, a member of that council. The same logic underlies the English word senator, which comes from Latin senex, also meaning old man.
