Etymology
Καινούριος grew out of the older form καινούργιος, itself built from καινός, 'new', and a form of έργον, 'work'. So the word originally meant something like 'newly made' or 'freshly wrought'. Over centuries of everyday speech the 'γ' dropped out, giving the modern spoken form καινούριος alongside the still-used καινούργιος. The deeper origin of καινός itself is debated among linguists, so no firm root is given here.
