Etymology

Θηρίο comes from Ancient Greek θηρίον, a diminutive of θήρ, the old word for a wild animal or beast of prey. Θήρ traces back to the Proto-Indo-European root for wild animal. Over centuries the diminutive form replaced the plain word in everyday speech, so modern Greek uses θηρίο for any beast, without any sense of smallness left in it.
