Etymology
Πέμπτος is the ancient Greek ordinal built from πέντε, the word for five. Greek formed ordinals with a dental suffix added to the cardinal number, and πέμπτος has kept this shape since Homeric times into Modern Greek. The word also survives as the name of Thursday, Πέμπτη, literally the fifth day of the week in the Christian count that starts from Sunday.
