Κατάλογος comes from the ancient Greek verb καταλέγειν, meaning to recount or enroll one by one. That verb joins the prefix κατά (down, thoroughly) with λέγω (to say, to count). Over time the noun came to mean an ordered list or register, and it passed into English as catalogue through Latin and French.
