Etymology
Υπάλληλος goes back to ancient Greek ὑπάλληλος, a compound of ὑπό (under) and a form of ἀλλήλων (one another). In antiquity it described things arranged one after another, in succession. Modern Greek narrowed the sense to a person who stands under another's authority at work, which gives us the current meaning of employee.
